March is Social Work month, time to celebrate the Social Workers in your life!
Ever since I became a Social Worker, I have always made an effort to celebrate the Social Workers I work with. I have banners saying “Happy Social Work Month” to make sure others are aware and that they acknowledge the Social Workers they encounter… and every now and then, I receive a, “Hey, thanks for all you do, you guys do great work.” Now, that’s one way to celebrate…getting the occasional appreciation goes a long way!
But why should we thank Social Workers, in particular at programs like our Adult Day Health Program at Gurwin? Let me count the ways!
- They greet you with warmth and comfort. A social worker is usually the first person you speak with when you call our Adult Day Health Program, and you will be greeted warmly and provided with all the information you need regarding the program.
- They will provide referrals to other services as needed. As they speak to you and assess the needs you or your family member might have, they will also share other community organizations that might be helpful such as homecare agencies, elder attorneys, support groups, etc. to make sure you or your loved one can get the best care possible.
- They offer emotional support even if they have never met you or your loved one, because they understand how difficult the process of finding the right care can be.
- They assist in your adjustment to the program. They will show you around, introduce you to staff and other clients, and make sure you know the different activities going on. They will answer your questions and spend time with you as long as you need them to.
- They advocate for you anytime. If services needed are decreased or cut for any reason, our social workers work with the client/families to advocate restoring services such as home care services/hours, mental health services, housing issues, etc.
- They will provide counseling. Whether you are feeling down, are going through a crisis or are having trouble with family or a roommate, the Social Worker will listen and guide you through your emotions, and help you find some comfort.
- They will help you practice mindfulness. Our Social Workers organize meditation programs for our registrants. There is also aromatherapy with coloring and storytelling, which aids in releasing stress and helps to build coping mechanisms to deal with anxiety.
- They work with the interdisciplinary team on your behalf. Social Work, along with the nurse, dietician, recreational therapist, Physical Therapist and Nursing Assistant, assure that you are functioning at your optimal level in all aspects of your life.
- They will assist you with discharge planning. If Gurwin’s Adult Day Health Program is no longer appropriate, the Social Worker will guide you to other services that might be more suitable.
- No matter what kind of Social Work a person practices, it all involves advocating for the well-being of those they serve, and how they can live the best life possible.
And that deserves a THANK YOU.
