What Is Short-Term Rehabilitation?

Short-term rehabilitation provides skilled medical care and therapeutic services for individuals recovering from illness or surgery. Our goal is to help patients achieve the highest possible level of function in the shortest amount of time.

At Gurwin Healthcare System, patients are assessed within 24 hours of arrival, often beginning therapy the same day. Rehabilitation staff is available seven days a week, ensuring your therapy begins quickly and progresses steadily. Many of our patients receive therapy services six days a week.

When to Consider Short-Term Rehabilitation

Many patients transition to short-term rehab when they’re ready to leave the hospital after surgery or illness but aren’t quite ready to return home. Our rehabilitation programs provide 24/7 medical support and individualized therapies designed to help you safely return to your normal life.

A medical provider may recommend short-term rehabilitation after:

  • A stroke or cardiac event
  • Orthopedic surgery or joint replacement
  • Prolonged infection such as pneumonia
  • Complex medical issues requiring continued care
  • An injury requiring physical therapy

“I really don’t know how else to express my gratitude for Gurwin’s ability to transform a potentially stressful situation into a very smooth postoperative course. My mother enjoyed her time so much there that she didn’t want to leave. Overall, it was a fantastic experience for my family, and I will enthusiastically recommend Gurwin for rehabilitation services.” -Carlos F.

What if the resident doesn't feel up to going to therapy on a given day?

We will attempt therapy again later in the day or the next day. Therapists consult with the medical department and follow their recommendations. It's important to note that missing therapy for more than three days may affect Medicare eligibility.

What is a short-term rehab resident?

Does Medicare pay for short-term rehabilitation?

For short-term residents, Medicare may cover up to 100 days with appropriate qualifications. Coverage is typically full for the first 20 days, with a coinsurance applying for days 21-100.
