Winners of the 31st Annual Gurwin Photo Contest Have Been Chosen!

The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is pleased to announce that the winners of the 31st Annual Photo Contest have been selected and  will be announced in the coming weeks. Amateur photographers and students are invited to submit their best photos for a chance to win a recognition award and cash prizes –and the opportunity to have their work permanently displayed in the Center’s renowned Tiffen Gallery for the enjoyment of residents, staff and visitors.

Nearly 1000 submissions are received each year from across the globe and are judged by a panel of professional photographers for clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center.

Grand Prize, Honorable Mentions, as well as a Best-in-Show winner will be awarded in 12 categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Student, Altered/Enhanced, Long Island/ New York and Action/ Sports. Gurwin residents and staff also weigh-in on their favorites for a “Resident/ Staff Selection” winner.  Photos not selected for a prize award are repurposed as reminiscence aids, for visual stimulation and art therapy, providing a source of comfort and inspiration, specifically for residents in the Center’s Memory Care Unit and Adult Day Care Programs, making each photo submission a “winner.”

One of Long Island’s premier photo competitions, the Gurwin Photo Contest is made possible each year by long-time sponsor The Tiffen Company, in memory of Helen and Nat Tiffen, the company’s founder and former Gurwin resident. Based in Hauppauge, NY, The Tiffen Company is a leading manufacturer of glass filters and other fine products for digital, still, video, motion pictures and television.

About our Unique Photo Contest

This year marks Gurwin’s 31st year hosting Long Island’s premier photography contest.   Each year, submissions are solicited from amateur photographers and students from all over the world. Photos entered are judged by a panel of professional photographers; winners are chosen in 12 categories, as well as Best-In-Show honors, and are revealed at an awards presentation ceremony in early summer.  Photos chosen by our judges are enlarged to 20×28 prints, beautifully framed and displayed permanently in our 460-bed nursing and rehabilitation center for the enjoyment of our residents, staff and visitors.  Every entry is a winner in our unique contest, in that submitted prints are used in art therapy and reminiscence programs for residents and adult day program participants throughout the year.

On behalf of the 460 residents who call Gurwin “home,” their families, and our staff and volunteers, thank you to all those who entered for sharing your talent with us.  Enjoy perusing through our 2023 Winner’s Gallery:
