Stuart B. Almer, FACHE, President and CEO of Gurwin Healthcare System, was recently featured on NPR’s Heart of the East End with award-winning journalist Gianna Volpe to discuss innovative approaches to senior care and the importance of planning for future healthcare needs.

Broadcasting on 88.3 WLIW-FM, Long Island’s only local NPR radio station, the conversation highlighted how Gurwin has evolved from its origins in the 1980s to become a comprehensive healthcare system serving Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

A Legacy of Excellence in Healthcare

For over 35 years, Gurwin Healthcare System has been providing award-winning care to Long Islanders. What began as a nursing home has grown into a full continuum of care spanning 36 acres in Commack, offering services that meet individuals wherever they are in their healthcare journey.

“We are a full continuum of care based in Commack, Long Island,” Almer explained during the interview. “We’re large enough in scope and diversity that we have services that others can’t fully provide. The fact that we have had a history, a strong history in healthcare, sets us apart from others.”

Comprehensive Care Under One Roof

Gurwin’s campus brings together multiple levels of care, creating a seamless experience for individuals and families:

  • Skilled Nursing – 460-bed nursing home providing 24-hour medical care and comprehensive rehabilitation services
  • Short-Term Rehabilitation – Helping patients recover and return home after surgery or illness, available at both our Commack and Holtsville locations
  • Assisted Living – Fay J. Lindner Residences with 210 apartments offering support while maintaining independence
  • Memory Care – Specialized secure units for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, featuring innovative Immersion Room technology
  • Independent LivingFountaingate Gardens life plan community for active seniors
  • Home Care – Professional support services in your own home throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties
  • Adult Day Care – Medical and social programs providing daytime care and engagement

The Most Important Message: Plan Ahead

One key theme emerged throughout the conversation—the importance of planning for future care needs before a crisis occurs.

“Very often we typically don’t plan for our futures or only plan when we’re in a crisis. My guidance to anyone is to really do your homework, plan for the future, plan when you’re not under duress. It makes it much easier to transition.”

Almer encourages families to:

  • Tour facilities before you need them
  • Talk to current residents and patients about their experiences
  • Understand your options across the continuum of care
  • Compare costs realistically including all services provided
  • Ask questions when you’re not under pressure to make immediate decisions

Why Families Choose Gurwin

When individuals and families research their options and visit the Gurwin campus, they consistently discover more than they expected.

“When individuals visit us and tour the campus, they’re always pleasantly surprised with all that we offer,” Almer shared. “It really is a beautiful campus.”

The integrated nature of Gurwin’s services means:

  • Continuity of care as needs change over time
  • Staying in the family even when transitioning to different levels of care
  • Access to specialists and medical services on-site
  • Peace of mind knowing comprehensive care is available when needed
