It’s June, summer is right around the corner, and it’s a good time to evaluate how you’re doing taking care of yourself this year. Did you resolve to take better care of yourself in 2014? Are you making strides in achieving a healthier you—mind, body and soul? At Gurwin, we’ve resolved to help you make some small changes throughout the year that will help you achieve your goal, and we give you tips to help on the first Tuesday of the month. So far, we suggested you donate blood, add a little exercise, make small changes to your eating habits, reduce your stress, and find time to volunteer. This month, we focus on a resolution to protect your skin. Did you know that your skin is you largest organ? Besides acting as the packaging for the rest of our organs, it also protects them and your bones from damage. In addition, it helps keep our body temperature regulated and allows us to have the sense of touch. We couldn’t live without our skin! But during the summer especially, we tend to neglect this important organ. Sun exposure damages our skin and its effects can be felt and seen for decades. It’s never too early to protect your skin for life! Here are five skin safety tips to keep in mind this summer:
  1. Always wear sunscreen and re-apply consistently throughout the day. Many moisturizers and makeups have sunscreen in them, which is helpful, but when you are out in the sun, be sure all exposed skin is properly protected.
  2. Try to avoid being out in the sun between 11 am and 2 pm, when the sun is the strongest.
  3. Wear lightweight clothing with long sleeves to cover up and avoid sunburn.
  4. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun’s rays. Choose sunglasses with UV protection that blocks at least 99% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.
  5. Drink lots of water when you are out in the sun to stay hydrated.
It’s important for everyone to see a dermatologist once a year for a total body skin check. Skin cancer is usually found on the most exposed areas of our bodies, but can also be found in between our toes and on the soles of our feet. It is important to be assessed each year! Living on Long Island gives us the benefit of beautiful beaches, but we need to be smart. Resolve to protect the skin you’re in!
