Guardianship, Capacity and the Rights of Older Adults
Join us for an informative presentation, light dinner and opportunity to network with colleagues!
Social workers and certified case managers will earn 2 CEU credits for this workshop to be held October 9, 2025 at Island Nursing and Rehab Center, part of the renowned Gurwin Healthcare System, located in Holtsville, Long Island.
Topics to be covered include:
Understanding Capacity and Decision-Making: How capacity is evaluated in older adults, the role of healthcare and legal professionals, and ethical considerations in supporting autonomy while ensuring safety.
Guardianship and Alternatives: The legal framework for guardianship, when it may be necessary, alternatives such as power of attorney or advance directives, and the balance between protection and independence.
Protecting the Rights of Older Adults: Safeguarding rights during guardianship proceedings, preventing exploitation or abuse, and ensuring dignity, choice and quality of life remain at the forefront of care.

Dinner presentation will begin promptly at 5:30 PM.
