About the Gurwin Photo Contest
One of Long Island’s premier photo competitions, the Gurwin Photo Contest is made possible each year by long-time sponsor The Tiffen Company, in memory of Helen and Nat Tiffen, the company’s founder and former Gurwin resident. Based in Hauppauge, NY, The Tiffen Company is a leading manufacturer of glass filters and other fine products for digital, still, video, motion pictures and television.
Nearly 1000 submissions are received each year from across the globe and are judged by a panel of professional photographers who choose the winners based on clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center. Grand Prize, Honorable Mentions, as well as a Best-in-Show winner are named in each of 12 categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Student, Altered/Enhanced, Long Island/ New York and Action/Sports. Gurwin residents and staff will also weigh-in on their favorites, choosing several “Resident/ Staff Selections” from among the entries.
Now in its year 31st year, the Gurwin Photo Contest offers amateur photographers and students an opportunity to be recognized for their work, as well as the chance to make an impact on the lives of Gurwin’s residents. More than 1000 enlarged and beautifully framed photos now adorn the nursing and rehabilitation center’s corridors, creating a warm and welcoming environment for residents, visitors and staff. Entries not selected for a prize are utilized by Gurwin’s Therapeutic Recreation team as inspiration for art therapy and for reminiscence programs for those with memory impairment, as well as by Gurwin’s team of physical and occupational therapists as motivational markers for strength, balance and endurance rehabilitation, deeming every submission a “winner.”
